The works "Paris to the Moon" and "An Ecnounter" both use a valuable tool that every writer should learn to use.  That is the ability to put the readers into the place of the story.  Place is such an integral part of any writing because it sets the "scene" for the work.  If a reader cannot visualise the place that the writer/narrator is in, then it becomes impossible to grasp the point or points that the writer is trying to make.  In "Paris to the Moon" the writer is illustrating the changes in his life by describing the different parts of Paris that he is living in.  He focus on the differences between what he is familiar with and Paris itself.  He also discusses the perceptions that people have of Paris and how wrong that perception is, at least to his eyes.  As you read his narrative you begin to get a sense of what Paris is really like, and how it is affecting the writer, and his work.  Place can make or break a story, and what you must remember is that every piece of writing, no matter how technical or dry, is in essence a story.  Place is an integral part of any story

The two works "Native Hill" and a "Narrative Life" focus upon the ways in which our environment and our experiences growing up to a large extent control our development as a writer.  Both of the authors spent a large part of their time in these pieces describing the environment in which they grow up.  A part of this environment includes what the authors were reading as they grew up.  It was extremely interesting in a "Narrative Life" how the author compares his own life to the comics that he was reading.  He discusses how he dreamed of being a superhero like Captain America, and mentions his own disability which was a large part of his life.  The main point of both these pieces is that environment is the key to the originality and uniqueness of every writer.  We are the sum of our experiences and this is expressed through the writers of the two authors, and truthfully is expressed through everyone's writing.  Everyone has had different experiences, and thus no two authors can truly be said to be the same.
