Ok, for my groups research project I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how other colleges try and deal with their students nutritional health and I realized something.  Its a 50/50 deal.  Half of the colleges I looked at do what Rowan does.  They say they offer nutritional alternatives, but...yeah not so much.  THe other half actually goes out of their way to install food places that provide nutritional food.  They put up the nutritional facts at all of their eateries.  They send pamphlets around to their freshmen and new transfer students to advise them of the eating options on campus.  They don't try to control what their students eat, but they do provide a wide range of options.  I wonder why it is that Rowan does not try to do this? 
 
I was doing some work on my collaborative research project, and I had an idea:  what does Rowan say about their nutritional options?  So, I went to Rowan's webpage and started looking at their food services options.  Rowan is proudly toting the revamp of some of their eating services on campus.  In fall 2011 they will be opening a southwestern taqueria, a new Smoke House BBQ, and is still offering salads and wraps at Garden Fresh.  So out of the three new places opening on campus only 1 offers nutritional food.  And thats not even a new option, theyre just revamping something thats been there for years!  Also interesting, is that no where on that webpage does it discuss nutritional eating, and how Rowan wants to help students with their nutritional health.  Instead, they proudly proclaim that they understand that we, the students, have busy schedules and they want to offer us opportunities for "great eating".  Great eating vs. nutritional eating...hmmmmm
 
Alright, so my group has been working on finding out how college students view their nutritional health.  We've come up with surveys, we've taken interviews, we've examined the results, and...we've realized our topic apparently shifted somewhere.  Somehow, not sure exactly how, we've wound up focusing on how Rowan students view their nutritional help and if Rowan helps students or hinders them.  I guess it shouldn't really be too surprising that our research took that turn without us really realizing it.  I mean after all me and my group members are Rowan students, and all the people we have interviewed, and given surveys to are Rowan students.  Still its interesting that our research took this turn without us realizing it until we began to examine all of our results; but that's research for you.  Its always evolving.
 
The biggest problem with a collaborative project, is that it requires a great deal of organization.  You have to constantly try to match up the schedules of the members of the group to find a time that works for everybody.  Happily, with this group I have lucked out.  Everybody is the group is computer savvy which allows us to do a great deal of our collaborating via email or twitter.  This makes things so much easier for everybody involved.  It saves us all time, so that when we do meet in person generally were just meeting to finalize something, or to put the next stage of the project into motion.  Normally, I hate group projects...but Im actually enjoying working with a group that is able to get things done
 
These are the results that my group members and I have recieved from our surveys that we had people do about their nutritional health.  Once all of the data is gathered and compiled I will be modifying this post to show the results as a whole, but until then this is what we have gathered so far.

So my group has been working on an idea for our research project.  We have decided to do a bit of investigation into the way that college students view their own nutritional health and if they actually follow what they say is their own nutritional values.  So as I sat here considering this idea, I started to think about my own nutritional health.  I sat and thought and thought and sat.  As I sat with some friends watching tv I decided that I was a fairly nutritional guy...Yeah!  how could I not be?  I stayed in decent shape, didn't stuff my face every day; I was a nutritional eater!...Then I looked around me.  A bag of chips sat open next to me.  On the table were the remains of my dinner:  a 10 piece nugget from Mcdonalds, 2 eclairs from wawa, a soda, a small bag of pretzels, and a large fry...Maybe Im not as nutritional as I thought.  Its going to be interesting to see if other people my age have a similar view of their own nutritional healthand if theirs is as "true" as mine...We'll see
 
These are some ideas I have for a collaborative research project I will be doing that is connected to the food industry.
1)what are the differences in how food is cared for in the different types of restaurants that exist.  Ie fast food, diners, chain restaurants, etc
2)How much of the nutritional facts are actually presented on different types of food packaging?

Oral history serves a valuable purpose.  Without it we would not have written history, we would not have gossip, speech, love, hate, anything.  Oral history is language.  No matter what if people can communicate they will remember.  They will tell others of their memories.  Those people will remember that conversation and it may alter their own perceptions.  This is not to say that oral history is not without flaws.Theres an old saying "there's three sides to an argument: his, hers and the truth".  THis illustrates perfectly the problems inherent in any form of communication.  People will have their own opinions and this will alter the "history" they tell; whether it is written
 
"In attempting to locate narrative inquiry historically, we begin by marking off the territory of this methodology."  This is the first line of the situating narrative inquiry piece, and it really stood out to me for one reason:  the word territory.  This is because the story immediately begins by discussing place...Im beginning to notice a theme in this course.  It continues to discuss territory throughout the piece "we are marking the territory of narrative inquiry not at its boundaries".  metaphysical place is strewn throughout this piece.  Admittedly the main focus of this piece seems to be the four emerging themes of narrative inquiry but place seems to hover in the background.  "In the turn toward narrative inquiry, no change in direction is more important than the change in an understanding of the relationship of the researcher to the researched. In the move toward narrative inquiry, the turn is characterized as a movement away from a position of objectivity defined from the positivistic, realist perspective toward a research perspective focused on interpretation and the understanding of meaning"  Even when discussing the emerging themes or turns Im seeing place!  t  I don't know if Im seeing this because its actually there or because Ive been trained to look solely at place, but there you have it.
